9/20/2008   CADD Art Lab Opening
Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas to open new nonprofit gallery space in downtown Dallas

The Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas (CADD) announce the opening of CADD Art Lab, an exciting new contemporary art venue located in downtown Dallas. CADD Art Lab will open to the public on Saturday, September 20 at 1608 Main Street with an all-day event, Open House: In the Lab, presented by DOWNTOWNDALLAS, from 11:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.

CADD Art Lab is designed to serve the art community as an exhibition space and as a center for programs on contemporary art. CADD Art Lab will focus on developing and presenting innovative educational programs designed for artists, collectors, museum professionals, and the cultural
community of Dallas. The 4,000 square-foot venue will feature six thematic curated group exhibitions a year drawn from the eleven CADD member galleries: And/Or Gallery, Barry Whistler Gallery, Conduit Gallery, Craighead-Green Gallery, Gerald Peters Gallery, Holly Johnson Gallery, Marty Walker Gallery, PanAmerican ArtProjects, The Public Trust, Road Agent, and Valley House Gallery and Sculpture Garden.

DOWNTOWNDALLAS welcomes Cadd Art Lab to Main Street

On Saturday, September 20, CADD Art Lab will celebrate the opening of its doors officially with Open House: In the Lab, presented by DOWNTOWNDALLAS. Hours will be extended that day to 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Scheduled events include an Artist Talk at 2 p.m. followed by a reception and tours throughout the day. Art Lies, the Houston-based contemporary art magazine, will be on hand to launch their Fall 2008 issue. The inaugural exhibition, “Indexing the Moment,” will run from September 20–October 30, 2008. “Indexing the Moment” explores the relationship of artists to the “contemporary” and features art from all eleven CADD member galleries.

About the building

Built in 1915 the first floor of the 1608 Main Street building was most recently home of Dallas’ Linz Brothers, a jewelry firm. Now being transformed into a professional gallery space by TKTR Architects, CADD Art Lab will feature one large gallery segmented into two distinct spaces and a mezzanine with a second more intimate gallery.

Conveniently located next to Neiman Marcus and near the new Joule Hotel and Charlie Palmer Restaurant, the 4,000 square foot space features a full-length glass wall facing the pedestrian walkway between Main and Commerce. Garage parking is available at Dal Park across from Neiman Marcus at the corner of Commerce and Ervay. Metered street parking is located near the building and is free after 6 p.m. on weekdays and all-day Saturday and Sunday. The gallery is easy walking distance from the Akard DART rail station.

New Director

In March CADD named Anne Lawrence, formerly Associate Director at Road Agent, as the first Director of CADD. Lawrence began part-time in April and full-time in June to organize the transition to the new space. Previously Lawrence has worked at the Dallas Museum of Art and taught art history at universities. She received her Masters in Art History from The University of North Texas in Denton, TX, in 2003.

Past Activities

Since 2006 CADD has organized two art fairs in Dallas (2007, 2008) each bringing in nearly 1,500 visitors throughout the weekend event. In 2008 the CADD Art Fair included a keynote and booksigning by author, art enthusiast, and philanthropist Paige West, author of The Art of Buying Art, and panel discussions featuring artists and experts on New Media and Care and Conservation. With proceeds from ticket sales to the art fair each year CADD has awarded three scholarships to visual art seniors from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
